community for over two decades)
Over the decades Legacy cremation consultants have always been dedicated to treating the families who contact us with respect and compassion. At the same time we have adapted to the changing customs and ceremonies that are part of Chesapeake.
Gaining in popularity in recent years, some families find that a living memorial is the perfect way to lessen the fear and the sadness surrounding an impending death. This is an event held in advance of death, which allows loved ones to gather in the presence of the affected individual – in a peaceful environment – to celebrate his or her life and say their good-byes now, rather than later.
If you or a family member are dealing with a terminal illness, Legacy can provide the support you need to plan a living memorial. As a premiere cremation provider, we will utilize our expertise, professionalism, and compassionate service to support you through the process. We will use our years of experience to present all the available options.
How did the concept of a living memorial get started?
In the late 1990s, a retired California school teacher by the name of Edward “E.B.” Sugars helped to pioneer the living memorial service. At the age of 66, he found that he was dying of lung cancer after having been a recovered alcoholic and living a productive life. He wanted to find a way to let others know that he appreciated their support and so he organized the first ever living memorial service, inviting 200 of his closest friends, family and colleagues to his home for a potluck dinner and entertainment by a local brass band.
When E.G. Sugars held his living memorial service, he was confined to a wheelchair and hooked up to a portable oxygen tank. But his spirit and resolve were remarkable. He was able to speak long enough, even in this weakened state, to express to all present how much he loved them, and that death is something that must be accepted as a part of life. In addition, Mr. Sugars was able to leave a lasting memory of love for his closest friends and family. It was considered a great success and it got others to think about having their own living memorial when the time came. And, it taught all of us in the industry that this option can take fear out of the dying process.
Ever since the advent of videotape, many who were facing death have expressed their wishes in this way so that after death their loved ones can know exactly what they want. This has brought great comfort to the dying person, as well as to the family during a very difficult time.
Legacy cremation professionals are experienced in all aspects of cremation pre-planning and final arrangements, and can help you organize your own living memorial. Or, if you have a family member who is facing death, chances are they are already thinking about their final wishes. If you can, you might want to speak with him or her about this option. Keep in mind that the process allows you to coordinate important end of life issues in advance.

Why Choose the Cremation Solution and Pre-Plan?
Cremation pre-planning is the one way you can ensure that your final arrangements are carried out exactly as you want, whether you opt for a living memorial service, or not. For example, by providing written releases to a Legacy cremation counselor, you can plan ahead for the handling of your body. Legacy will pick up your body immediately after your death, and arrange for the final resting place: the cremains can be returned to your family for burial or safekeeping in an urn, or you can opt to have your ashes scattered. Legacy can arrange for this as well. The cremation process allows for a wide range of possibilities to satisfy every religious, financial, and personal preference.
If you want a living memorial, we will put you in touch with the event coordinators who work with Legacy, and we will all work together to ensure that you have the event that you want by arranging for entertainment, flowers and music, and anything else you might like. Be sure to get in touch with close family members and friends and let them know where and when it will be held. We guarantee a memorial service that will help you to celebrate your life in a dignified and meaningful way, and let others know how much they mean to you now. They will remember you always in this wonderful way.
